WHAT IS The Walk Group?

Well, as the name suggests, it is a low-intensity session that aims at fostering a strong sense of community, as well as allowing you to de-stress from life’s events, talk with friends and just generally be around a really great group of people that you will soon call your friends.
The surrounds of the Sutherland Shire are absolutely spectacular and we are super fortunate to be here. Sometimes, we forget that, so the walk group also gives you a chance to re-connect to nature, take in your surroundings, breathe a little, smell the roses and get some fresh air.
Not only that, as simple as it might seem, walking has been shown time and again to improve just about every part of your body, from you muscles to bones to heart and lungs.

WHY SHOULD I TRY The Walk Group?

We’ve probably touched on the benefits of regular walking, but if you are a little more ‘evidence-minded’ that is fine, we can provide some studies that also show you why you should try the walk group.
Several studies have shown that walking regularly can counteract the activity of weight promoting genes, the genes in your cells that encourage them to store fat. The gets back a little to what we touched on earlier.
There are also various studies that have shown regular walking, as little as 15 minutes at a low-intensity, can curb sugar cravings and that good old sweet tooth, that so many of us know about! It also, and this might be the most important thing, helps to boost your immune system, with some studies showing reductions in 30% or even 40% likelihood of getting the flu during the flu season. We could go on, but we think you get the picture!

When should I join the walk group for a session?

Join the walk group whenever you feel that you are stressed, missing community or just generally need a bit of a break from the typical high-intensity classes you might normally attend.

We’ve put together some really nice options for you to have a de-load or mental health week, with Yoga, Pilates and walking all on the schedule. If you really want to reduce your body fat, walking is a really good way to burn fat in a way that will not put a tonne of stress on your body.
If you really feel the need to get out in nature, take some time to smell the roses, as we have said, this group will prove to be ideal for you. Anytime that you want to move your body, but don’t want to push it, get involved and take a stroll, destress and enjoy.

Three reasons to try a walk group session

Reduce stress

Walking has been shown time and time again to reduce stress and improve your sense of wellbeing. It is the oldest form of exercise and has been around since humans stood on two legs, so it makes sense that a good old-fashioned walk can help us to feel better and move better. You can think of a walk as a great re-calibrator for the mid and body.

Burn fat

Believe it or not, walking is the single most effective way to burn fat using exercise or movement. But how can that be? When we perform exercise at a low intensity, like walking, because the energy that our body requires can be delivered very slowly, our bodies will tend to take the opportunity to use fat as the major source of energy and not carbs, like in high intensity exercise.

Create a community

Because you aren’t gasping for air and ‘smashing it out’ like in a traditional exercise session, the walk group really gives you a chance to connect to a group of people that will become your friends. At Totum Health, we are really big on creating a community of like-minded people that are all focussed on helping eachother and working towards the common-cause of being the best version of you that you can be!

I’ve been training at Fitness Playground and the Bunker for over 18 months now. Apart from strength training, I’ve loved working on improving callisthenics skills with my trainer Dave Marsh. It’s really helped with mobility, movement and strength, and overall well being. What I love most about the Bunker is the sense of community.
