WHAT IS Yoga?

There is a common misconception that you need to be flexible to do yoga, but in truth, the practice is accessible to all levels. During our yoga session, you’ll spend a full hour on your mat aligning your body through breath-work, movement, and  meditation. Incorporating elements of Hatha, vinyasa, and yin yoga, this beginner friendly practice will improve your body awareness and challenge you to slow down and breathe. Through various classic postures(poses) you’ll challenge your flexibility, mobility and balance. Some poses are conducted in a flowing sequence, warming the body and building some strength and mobility. Some poses focus on balance, allowing you to test each side of your body and improve your overall stability. Others are more static in nature, which may challenge you to find calm and stillness.

WHY SHOULD I TRY Yoga?

Have you ever noticed that you aren’t recovering as well after a long hard fitness session as you used to? As we age, our body takes the shapes we inhabit most often. Think of driving in your car and then sitting at a desk all day. One day may not have a huge impact, perhaps a bit of stiffness. But, day after day, year after year, this can inhibit your mobility and posture. These habitual physical patterns often cause chronic back and neck pain, and overall fatigue.

Offered at a variety of locations and times, this session is the perfect way to recover and restore midweek, setting you up for further success in all your other sessions. With a weekly practice, you’ll see physical improvements in flexibility, mobility, and balance. This can enhance many things from your squat depth to back pain or overall recovery.  The mediation and breathing exercises can also boost your mental state, increasing your patience and overall sense of calm.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Did you know that your flexibility, mobility, and balance can enhance your athletic performance? Whether you’re running or lifting, your ability to maintain positions and reach depth can have a huge impact on your results. Another surprising benefit comes from the improvements to balance. Your balance can directly correlate to your agility and speed. Athletic performance can also be influenced by your mental headspace and breathing. On a long endurance run, both your breath and your mental fortitude become huge factors in success. If you’re looking for the perfect supplement to your active lifestyle, which will boost your flexibility, mobility, and mood, look no further!

Three reasons to try a Yoga session

Improve Flexibility

We now know that the best ways to improve your flexibility, over the long term, is to move through your body’s full range-of-motion in a dynamic way. Dynamic simply means moving and we now know that static stretching, that we have all done and practiced for years, does feel good in the short-term, but doesn’t really help in the long term. For the best results, long term, nothing beats Yoga.

Reduce stress

By practicing certain mindfulness techniques, breathing rhythms and patterns, Yoga has been shown through ages to help to reduce stress and improve your sense of wellbeing and happiness. Yoga has also been shown to reduce whole body inflammation, improve your sleep and awareness of self, this is in-line in with our ethos of taking care of your whole health.

Improve whole body strength and balance

It isn’t all about meditation and mindfulness, however. Some of poses and ‘holds’ in the different types of Yoga are really challenging and can therefore have profound benefits to your strength, balance and body-awareness. Focussing on your mind- body connection, you will feel the subtle differences in the way that Yoga challenges you to move your body in a very controlled way.

I’ve been training at Fitness Playground and the Bunker for over 18 months now. Apart from strength training, I’ve loved working on improving callisthenics skills with my trainer Dave Marsh. It’s really helped with mobility, movement and strength, and overall well being. What I love most about the Bunker is the sense of community.
